Why Hand Washing Matters

Regular hand washing with soap and water removes germs, bacteria, and viruses that can cause illness. It's a simple but powerful way to protect yourself and others from getting sick. Combined with other safety measures like wearing masks, maintaining distance, and keeping environments clean, proper hand hygiene forms the foundation of good health practices.

When to Wash Your Hands

  • Before eating or preparing food
  • After using the bathroom
  • After coughing, sneezing, or blowing your nose
  • After touching public surfaces
  • Before and after caring for someone who is sick
  • After handling garbage or cleaning
  • When hands are visibly dirty

Proper Hand Washing Technique

  1. Wet your hands with clean, running water
  2. Apply soap and lather well
  3. Scrub all surfaces for at least 20 seconds
  4. Pay attention to backs of hands, between fingers, and under nails
  5. Rinse thoroughly with clean water
  6. Dry with a clean towel or air dry

When Soap Isn't Available

If soap and water aren't readily available, use alcohol-based hand sanitiser with at least 60% alcohol. However, hand washing with soap and water is always preferred when possible. Remember that sanitiser may not be as effective when hands are visibly dirty or greasy. Continue practicing other safety measures like wearing masks, maintaining safe distance, and keeping environments clean. If you're experiencing symptoms of illness, proper hand hygiene becomes even more important. Consider monitoring your health when appropriate and maintain your mental wellbeing during times of illness.
